Dionysian Rites 〰️ The Ancient Art of Re-Membering 〰️
On the ancient healing island of Kos, we enter a contemporary rite of passage inspired by the mysteries of Dionysus, the healing traditions of Asclepius and Hippocrates, and the ancient current of the Great Mother, the primordial feminine principle of Earth, fertility, birth, death and regeneration, calling us to embody the Goddess Consciousness.
Through pilgrimage, embodied ritual, movement, breath, voice and ceremony, you will be gracefully guided by Apostolia Papadamaki, distinguished performance artist, Ancient Greek wisdom carrier and transformational mentor, to enter a sacred technology of transformation.
Learning through the body to reconcile opposites, restore inner balance and move from fragmentation toward wholeness, so you may consciously cross the threshold into the next phase of your life.
The Sacred Landscape of Our Journey
Kos island
Kos, birthplace of Hippocrates and home to the celebrated Asklepieion, the island became one of the great healing centers of the ancient Mediterranean.
With the Temple of Apollo and the Altar of Dionysus woven into its sacred landscape, the island holds the ancient forces of healing, illumination and transformation at the heart of our initiatory journey.
Our Sanctuary
Our daily practices, rituals and ceremonies will unfold at Hippocrates Garden, a living reconstruction of a fifth-century BCE Greek settlement inspired by the world in which Hippocrates lived.
This unique sanctuary includes an ancient Greek oikos, the Philosophers’ Stoa, a stone-built theatre, Demeter’s Museum, the Temple of Apollo, and the Vineyard of Eros, creating an extraordinary setting where Ancient Greek wisdom, nature and embodied practice come alive.
Our Island Home
Set on a peaceful hillside near the seaside village of Mastichari, the Small Village Hotel, will be our home for the journey.
Independent residences rest among Mediterranean gardens and stone pathways, overlooking the deep blue Aegean Sea and the island of Kalymnos.
Surrounded by nature, spaciousness and the extraordinary sunsets of western Kos, it offers us a quiet sanctuary to rest, dream and integrate between our practices and pilgrimages.
The retreat prices start from €1590 depending on the type of accommodation in a single, double or triple room.
My Invitation to You
There are moments in life when what once defined us begins to fall away. An identity changes. A relationship ends. A familiar way of being no longer feels true. We find ourselves between what has been and what has not yet been born.
The ancient Greeks knew the transformative power of this threshold. Dionysus, the god who crosses boundaries, becomes our guide into this liminal space, between order and wildness, instinct and consciousness, dissolution and creation, death and renewed life.
This is an invitation not to become someone else, but to re-member yourself.
To loosen what has become rigid. To gather what has been scattered. To welcome home what has been forgotten or exiled. To restore the relationship between body, heart, instinct, imagination and soul.
Through ritual and embodied practice, we learn to remain within the fertile space of not knowing — to listen before defining who we must become next, and to trust the intelligence of the body as we cross consciously into a new phase of life.
The Dionysian Rites — Dream, Remembrance & Embodied Wisdom
-
The Dionysian Rites are a contemporary embodied practice of transformation inspired by Ancient Greek wisdom and the mysteries of Dionysus.
Through ceremony, movement, rhythm, breath, voice and ek-stasis — stepping beyond the habitual self — we enter the liminal space where opposites can meet and what has become fragmented can begin to reunite.
It is a sacred technology of re-membering, guiding us from the intelligence of the body toward the wisdom of the soul, from dismemberment toward wholeness.
-
The Dionysian Rites came to me two years ago through vivid and repetitive dreams , as ritual actions whose meaning was very clear and accurate. I meditated on what I received, I embodied it and explored its resonances within Ancient Greek mythology and wisdom, and allowed them to reveal their purpose over time.
They are not reconstructions of historical Dionysian rituals, but contemporary ceremonies born at the meeting place of dream, research, artistic practice and embodied remembrance.
Perhaps this too is an Anamnesis: allowing something ancient to become present through the body again.
-
I offer the Dionysian Rites now because we are living through a profound time of transition, personally and collectively.
Old structures are dissolving while what comes next has not yet fully taken form.
We need ways of inhabiting this liminal space without fearing or escaping it, ways of restoring balance between opposing forces, remembering our relationship with Nature and the Divine Feminine, and trusting the creative intelligence that transforms endings into beginnings.
The invitation is not to return to who we were, but to cross the threshold more wholly into who we are becoming.
The Journey — Seven Days of Ceremony & Remembrance
-
Our seven days together unfold as one continuous initiatory journey.
Day One begins with arrival, grounding and a pilgrimage to the sea, where we make our first offerings and consciously cross the threshold into the experience.
On Day Two, we undertake a morning pilgrimage to an ancient sacred site with offerings, before gathering in the early evening to enter our four-day ceremonial passage through the Elements — Earth, Air, Fire and Water.
Each day moves through a rhythm of morning purification, grounding and silence; teachings and sharing; preparation of ritual objects and offerings; and embodied ceremony through movement, breath, voice, dance, hymns and invocation.
Earth brings us into the body, grounding and the primordial presence of Gaia;
Air opens breath, voice and expression.
Fire carries us into release, transformation and Dionysian ek-stasis; and Water invites surrender, purification and renewal.
Day Six is devoted to integration, allowing what has been experienced to settle into body and consciousness.
On Day Seven, we gather for our closing practice, complete the circle, and prepare to return, carrying the experience from ceremony into life.
